IS MIRRI21 Final General Assembly at the University of Minho
In the framework of the 15th International Conference on Culture Collections (ICCC), the IS MIRRI21 Final General Assembly took place on 14-15 June 2023 and was held both online and in-person.
The event was opened and held by Prof. Doctor Nelson Lima, the IS MIRRI21 Project Coordinator and MIRRI-PT Coordinator. The project partners and work packages leaders presented their project results and discussed key outcomes and challenges.
The IS MIRRI21 project commenced in February 2020 under the coordination of University of Minho (UMINHO) in Portugal. This European project aims to implement the already existing MIRRI entity as a successful and productive infrastructure for the diverse number of stakeholders who would benefit from the project.
On 14 December 2022, the Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium (MIRRI-ERIC),the pan-European Research Infrastructure for the preservation, study, provision and valorization of microbial resources and biodiversity, inaugurated its new headquarters premises, located at the Campus of Gualtar of the University of Minho, in Braga, Portugal.
As a distributed Research Infrastructure, MIRRI brings together about 50 microbial domain Biological Resource Centres (mBRCs), culture collections, and research institutes from 10 European countries. Portugal and Spain jointly host MIRRI-ERIC, with the former hosting the statutory seat. The other founding Members are Belgium, France, and Latvia.

Meeting with the KÜKENS Collection and the Istanbul University representatives
In mid-July, Joanna Bucka-Kolendo, Ph.D. and Agata Wierzbinska, representatives of the Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology, visited and held meetings in Istanbul University, which were organized as part of the IS_MIRRI21 project, especially with regard to WP 8 on the Consolidation & Enlargement of Membership and Partnership of MIRRI.
They met with Prof. Dr. Mustafa Oral Oncul, the Vice-Rector of the Istanbul University, Prof. Zerrin Aktas, and the research staff from the Department of Clinical Microbiology. Professor Zerrin Aktas is also a Director of the KÜKENS Collection (Culture Research and Practice Center Directorate), part of Istanbul University.
KÜKENS Collection was founded in 1979. It owns the bacteria isolated from Turkey and various microorganisms brought from different culture centers worldwide. KÜKENS is a member of the WFCC and ECCO.
During the meetings, the activities of KÜKENS were presented, and the preliminary talks on Turkey’s membership in the MIRRI ERIC were undertaken. Turkey has expressed huge interest in the Consortium and expressed its willingness to become a Member.

The 5th World Congress of Latvian Scientists “Research Latvia”

|
The 5th World Congress of Latvian Scientists “Research Latvia” is one of the widest-reaching events in the Latvian science community, gathering Latvian science ecosystem stakeholders from all over the world. The Congress is organised by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The topics reviewed and discussed within the work frame of the Congress included the critical objectives of the modern industry, such as green energy, the role of science in digital transformation, the impact of science in Latvia, etc.
Daina Eze, Vizma Nikolajeva, Zaiga Petriņa, Māris Seņkovs, Indriķis Muižnieks, from the University of Latvia (UL), are the IS MIRRI21 partners that attended the event. The IS MIRRI21 project was mentioned during the Poster presentation, named “Microbial resources of Latvia for a green, healthy and sustainable future”.

IS_MIRRI21 workshop on quality management
Parallel to the final IS_MIRRI21 meeting, Work package 3 has organized a dedicated workshop on quality management for participants of IS_MIRRI21 and ICCC-15 conference.
The workshop took place on 15 June 2023 and consisted of two sessions.
During the first session, chaired by Mrs Anabela Martins from MUM, UMinho (Portugal) and Vincent Van de Perre (BCCM, BELSPO, Belgium), speakers presented their experience with different standards, and how these helped them to improve their operations and to comply, not only with user’s requirements but also with legal requirements.
The second session was chaired by Aurora Zuzuarregui Miró (CECT, Spain) and Marleen Bosschaerts (BCCM, BELSPO, Belgium). Presentations dealt with multi-site quality management systems under ISO9001, the combination of multiple standards by one organisation, and how quality management can be implemented by a decentralised research infrastructure.
The session ended with a discussion about MIRRI-ERIC’s vision of quality. About 70 people attended both sessions. A success!

PYFF8 Conference : 8th conference on Physiology of Yeast & Filamentous Fungi
Jean-Luc Legras, on belhalf of IS MIRRI, joined the PYFF8 Conference, which occurred on 5-8 June 2023, in Cork, Ireland.
During the event, the IS MIRRI21 project was introduced in the presentation: «Implementing the MIRRI-ERIC».

The PYFF Conference has become one of the most important for European research groups working in biotechnology and using yeast and fungi. Every three years, scientists interested in the fundamental physiology and biotechnological applications of yeast and filamentous fungi have gathered to share latest results, develop new collaborations and reinvigorate networks. The combination of diverse yeasts and fungi facilitates cross-disciplinary exchange as researchers study shared themes using similar technologies. Themes include evolution and adaptation, stress response and resilience, metabolism and systems biology, while technologies such as functional genomics, metabolic engineering, genome editing, and synthetic biology are commonly applied to both yeast and filamentous fungi.

Slovakia’s 47th Annual Conference on Yeasts
Joanna Bucka-Kolendo, Ph.D. (IAFB) and Agata Wierzbińska participated in Slovakia’s 47th Annual Conference on Yeasts. This conference was organized by the Institute of Chemistry, Slovak Academy of Sciences, collaborating with the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology. The event took place on 16-19 May 2023.
The participants represented mainly Slovakia and most European countries. Participation in the event was important as it allowed the establishment of many professional contacts with the Slovak Academy of Sciences representatives, who expressed their interest in joining the MIRRI Consortium.
Moreover, MIRRI was promoted among the conference participants during a dedicated poster session with the poster entitled: MIRRI: a pan-European Research Infrastructure for making microbial science & innovation happen.

IS_MIRRI21 Internal Workshop on MALDI-TOF MS
On 27-28 March 2023, IS_MIRRI21 partners and external experts part of the MALDI-TOF MS working group met at Institut Pasteur in Paris. The event was co-organized by project partners from INRAE, BCCM/LMG and Institut Pasteur.
MALDI-TOF MS is a cost-effective, rapid and reliable piece of technology used in the identification of microorganisms.
Current manufacturers of MALDI-TOF MS systems provide their own database, which are not interoperable in different systems and are mainly focused on the identification of clinical species.
The aim of this two-day workshop was to discuss the possibility of creating a common database interoperable in all devices and covering a wider range of microorganisms, to become a reference for MIRRI-ERIC partners as well as potential external customers.
The meeting was a unique opportunity for fruitful discussions paving the way to build an integrated database.
